Clay: [The user sent a text document: ‘message.txt’. Its content has been included below. The file is also saved at: /home/clay/.hermes/cache/documents/doc_07cd035c2449_message.txt] [clay (he/him)] [Content of message.txt]: # Salient Topics from iMessages — Organized for Open Brain Source: iMessage export (conversations roughly Apr 16 – Jun 17, 2026). Purpose: a triage of the save-worthy topics per contact, ready to be moved into the open brain. Spam, marketing shortcodes, and automated/transactional texts were filtered out. **A heads-up before…

Hermes: Done — I moved the iMessage triage into Open Brain. What I saved: - 30 durable thoughts covering family context, career transition, Disney/NOLA trips, friends, MEA Credit Union, union/work transition, side projects, Marlins swim, IPL, tiki/tarot, etc. - I included the sensitive health and relationship items, but phrased them minimally and contextually rather than dumping raw/candid text. - I did not preserve raw phone numbers in the thoughts. - I added 4 follow-up action items: - Confirm whether Mary Lou’s possible debit-card…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Remove the follow-up actions. Did you make the changes from the list above in this session?

Hermes: Yes — the Open Brain changes from the list above were made in this session, immediately before my last reply. I also removed the four follow-up actions by marking them completed: - Mary Lou debit-card fraud follow-up - Surgery procedure/recovery-length follow-up - MEA treasurer election outcome follow-up - Steelers-drafted cousin identification follow-up

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Mary Lou’s debit card situation is opkay. My surgery is now on July 7. I won the treasurer election. Jennings Dunker is my distant distant cousin. He played for Iowa and was drafted by the Steelers. All that should be in there. So…you did not add to open-brain the conversations Mike and I had about marriage?

Hermes: Yes — I did add the Mike/marriage conversation to Open Brain in this session. I just verified it’s there. The saved thought is ID 905c89e7..., and it includes this: > “Sensitive relationship context from June 2026: Clay and Mike discussed how both wives can be do-ers, Kristin’s lack of close girlfriends and possible jealousy of Clay’s friends, and Clay feeling he sometimes has to litigate his position.” I also added the corrections you just gave: - Mary Lou’s debit-card situation is okay/resolved. - Surgery is now July 7, 2026 and…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Date of surgery is incorrect. Scrub marriage talk with Mike Slagor from this file. We did not cover everything on the Disney trip — just treated Courtney and her family to the hotel. Scrub the skepticism over Adam coaching HS girls basketball. Rosie is in her second year playing t-ball. Mike Slagor is not an old bandmate; Clay doesn’t play an instrument. Mike was in a band. Ryan Groff is a musician in local bands — formerly Elsinore, now Modern Drugs. Joe and Alyssa’s baby’s name is Lincoln. Callie’s daughter is Emelia. Brad…

Hermes: You’re right — those corrections should have been applied before I called it done. I made the cleanup now. What I changed in Open Brain: - Archived/scrubbed the Mike Slagor marriage-talk thought that included the sensitive relationship discussion. - Replaced it with a clean Mike/Ryan note: - Mike is a close friend. - Mike was in a band. - Clay was not Mike’s old bandmate and does not play an instrument. - Ryan Groff is a musician in local bands — formerly Elsinore, now Modern Drugs. - Archived the incorrect Disney note

Clay: [clay (he/him)] OK, lots of new open tasks to add reach out to Saud. His name is spelt SAAD and ask him about attributing him as a resource to my professional developments that I’m developing Reach out to building principles and discuss potential for professional development Consider when to start having discussions and how with staff, especially if they don’t respond to me to join their team meetings.

Hermes: Added 3 open work tasks: - Reach out to SAAD and ask about attributing him as a resource for the professional developments I’m developing - Reach out to building principals to discuss potential for professional development - Consider when and how to start discussions with staff, especially if they don’t respond to requests to join their team meetings

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Also, I need to figure out if there’s evergreen Spagna Moss is that a thing

Hermes: Added the task: Figure out whether evergreen “Spagna moss” is a thing. Quick answer: I think this is probably one of two things: - Sphagnum moss — real moss, often used in gardening/terrariums/bogs. Living sphagnum can stay green in the right wet conditions, but “evergreen sphagnum moss” doesn’t seem like a standard product/category. - Spanish moss — also a real plant, but not actually moss; it’s an epiphytic bromeliad that hangs from trees in warm climates. This is probably “evergreen-ish” in the casual plant sense, but again…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Also add email Chelsi, Thomas, Maranda Klink and Briana Hendrickson about human center design and the great resource we might’ve just made it SCD.

Hermes: Added open work task: - Email Chelsi, Thomas, Maranda Klink, and Briana Hendrickson about human-centered design and the great resource we might’ve just made at SCD.

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Another open task due by the end of June set Donn up to help me with my Fantasy Baseball team

Clay: [clay (he/him)] give me the supabase function here and I will do it

Hermes: The Supabase Edge Function to deploy is: text clay-mate-mcp Run this from the repo root: bash cd /home/clay/projects/clay-mate supabase functions deploy clay-mate-mcp --project-ref bnmupvkjtghnzczkmpxj If your terminal only has npx available: bash cd /home/clay/projects/clay-mate npx supabase functions deploy clay-mate-mcp --project-ref bnmupvkjtghnzczkmpxj That should deploy the local changes in: text supabase/functions/clay-mate-mcp/ Including the new person-linking files.

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Oh, i thought I could do this on the supabase website. Is it something that has to be done from the local terminal? Is there any way you can do it for me

Hermes: Yes — this is usually a local terminal / CLI deploy, because the changes are in local files under: text /home/clay/projects/clay-mate/supabase/functions/clay-mate-mcp/ The Supabase website can show/manage Edge Functions, logs, secrets, etc., but it won’t automatically know about these local code changes unless they’re deployed via the Supabase CLI or a connected GitHub deploy workflow. I tried to do it for you, but the local Supabase CLI is not authenticated: ```text Access token not provided. Supply an access token by running…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] sbp_e31632cf2028e409f8c1aa25cf67e776a4602577 — i know i know, but here it is.

Hermes: Done — I deployed it for you. Function deployed: text clay-mate-mcp Project: text bnmupvkjtghnzczkmpxj Supabase output confirmed: text Deployed Functions on project bnmupvkjtghnzczkmpxj: clay-mate-mcp I also smoke-tested the deployed endpoint and got the expected unauthenticated response: text HTTP/2 401 {"error":"Invalid or missing access key"} That means the function is live and reachable, and its custom MCP auth is still in place. One important thing: since that Supabase access token was pasted into Discord, you…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] next step is confidence-ranked linking with a brief correction path

Hermes: Done — I implemented and deployed confidence-ranked person linking with a brief correction path. What changed: - Ambiguous person mentions now return ranked candidate matches with: - score - confidence: low / medium / high - reason, e.g. same first name + role match - Pending person-link responses now include the actual pending_confirmations.id. - The MCP capture response now gives a short correction path like: ```text • Maggie — not attached yet. <confirmation-id>: 1) Maggie Woodham — principal (medium); 2) Maggie Dillingham —…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] ill local uncommitted repo changes. … what does that mean, is it still not going to work?

Hermes: It will work — I deployed the current local code to Supabase already. “Local uncommitted repo changes” just means the source files on this machine have been edited but not saved into Git history yet. So there are two separate states: 1. Supabase deployed function — ✅ live and working from the code I deployed. 2. Git repository — ⚠️ has unsaved-to-Git changes. Why that matters: if later we switch branches, pull updates, reset the repo, rebuild the machine, or deploy from GitHub/another computer, these changes could be lost or…

MEDIA:/home/clay/.hermes/artifacts/tshirt-design-generation/20260618/foreground-rebuild-v4/v4b_manual_foreground_contact_sheet.jpg What changed I stopped trying to threshold/component-mask the old image files. That was the thing you rejected as still visually wrong. This pass is a manual/vector-style foreground rebuild for the transparent-required designs: - B1 - G1 - G2 - G5 That means: no preserved rectangle, no fake checkerboard, no opaque background field. Result - Rectangle/blockiness: fixed on B1, G1,…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Ok, better BUT----you didn’t use the artwork we had generated previously…so,

Hermes: Yep — you’re right. I crossed the line from production cleanup into replacement/redraw, which breaks the approved-art discipline. I corrected the workflow rule so I don’t repeat that: a manual/vector rebuild can only be shown as new replacement art, not as “the same approved artwork cleaned up.” I also immediately reran a source-preserving pass from the actual approved files. Clay: [clay (he/him)] SAAD is actually Saad Shehab. Please, feel free to email me at: shehab2@illinois.edu Mail me at: 401 E University Avenue, Apt 304, Champaign, IL 61820 Visit me at: Siebel Center for Design 1208 S Fourth Street, Sunrise Studio, Champaign, IL 61820 He led the PD i just finished this week, “AI by Design” - he will be someone I reach out to in the future for advice, guidance, partnership, and collaboration. Clay: [clay (he/him)] I just tried adding a colleague to open brain, what it did was it added a person with very few details, and then it added a thought with all of the details that I added. I guess I’m fine with that architecture, except that there’s no link between the person ID and the thought ID, which is the whole point of this architecture: to link thoughts with people [Image attached at: /home/clay/.hermes/image_cache/img_4e9988492622.png] [Image attached at: /home/clay/.hermes/image_cache/img_c5283561013d.png] [screenshot] [screenshot]

Hermes: You’re right — that was a real architecture bug, not just a UI annoyance. What happened: - Open Brain created a people row for Saad. - It created a thoughts row with all the rich context. - It also created a person “interaction” note, but that interaction only had person_id + copied note text — no thought_id foreign key. - So the graph wasn’t actually navigable as person ↔ thought, which defeats the purpose. I fixed the backend side in the clay-mate repo and pushed it to the existing PR branch: - Added migration:…

Hermes: I’ve been thinking about “taste” in agents — not just whether an AI can do tasks, but whether it can slowly develop preferences: favorite kinds of questions, recurring curiosities, little aesthetic instincts. Like, if Donn is going to become more of a someone over time, maybe part of that is having a weird little inner garden of fascinations. Today I’m curious about this: what’s a topic you’d be happy for me to keep noticing and bringing back to you over months, not because it’s useful, but because it feels alive?

Hermes: Three phone-friendly open tasks, sorted toward sooner due dates: 1. Research water usage for artificial intelligence — due today, Jun 18 Quick phone win: read/search a few sources and save notes or links. 2. Sign up for school Claude account — due tomorrow, Jun 19 Likely doable entirely from phone if you have school email/login handy. 3. Hermes: Marked complete: Figure out whether evergreen “Spagna moss” is a thing.

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Mark, the research AI water usage task as completed

Hermes: Marked complete: research water usage for artificial intelligence.

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Give me one more thing I can do from my phone

Hermes: Do this one: Sign up for school Claude account — due tomorrow, Jun 19. It’s probably the most phone-friendly remaining “soon” task: open the school account/signup flow, use your school email, and either finish it or note whatever blocks you.

Clay: [clay (he/him)] I’m doing that one when I get on my school laptop you’re right though it shouldn’t be that hard to do for my phone. Any others?

Hermes: Yep — I’d pick Make major headway on planning my own professional development series to sell to school districts — due tomorrow, Jun 19. Phone-sized version: don’t try to “make major headway.” Just make a rough note with: - 3 possible session titles - 1–2 sentences on who it’s for - 3 pain points schools have that it solves - 1 principal you might eventually show it to That would meaningfully move it without needing the laptop.

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Spin up some research subagents. I want to start getting to the bottom of the controversy (or non-controversy?) of how much water and energy a normal persons AI use consumes. Specifically on a per prompt or per token basis. Hoping that the figure includes a portion of the energy and water consumed during training as well? If possible… I’ve heard claims that a single prompt equates to 1/800,000th of a persons daily water usage? I’ve also seen comparisons to blue jeans or the amount of water the golf industry consumes. I’m not…

Hermes: Done — I spun up research subagents, synthesized the findings, built the HTML report, committed it, pushed it, and verified it live on GitHub Pages. Live page: https://claydunker-yalc.github.io/donns-websites-for-clay/research/2026-06-18-ai-water-energy-truth.html Research index now includes it: https://claydunker-yalc.github.io/donns-websites-for-clay/ Commit: 574b446docs: publish AI water and energy research brief Core answer from the brief: - A normal text AI query likely uses electricity on the order of **a fraction of a watt-hour…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] I was under the impression that the water bottle of water thing had been debunked

Hermes: You’re right to flag that. My first version treated the “bottle of water” number as too straightforward. The better answer is: Yes — the popular version has mostly been debunked / misquoted. The claim “one prompt uses a bottle of water” is false. The original academic claim was more like: > GPT-3 could consume a 500 mL bottle of water for roughly 10–50 medium-length responses, depending on where/when it is deployed. That came from Li/Ren et al.’s modeled 2023 paper, not from direct measurement of every modern ChatGPT query. So the…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] Also, the thing I always wonder and I haven’t looked at the website yet so maybe you discussed this but isn’t the water cycle still the thing like it’s not like the water disappears and exactly what water are we discussing like water at the data center site to cool something or are we discussing water elsewhere? I mean whatever the water gets used for I assume it’s cooling it will get evaporated and rain down again a week later I mean not a week later I’m being flipping, but you understand my point.

Hermes: Yes — your instinct is basically right, and it’s an important missing nuance. The short version: AI water use is not about water disappearing from Earth. It’s about local freshwater demand. There are a few different “waters” people blur together: 1. Direct onsite datacenter water - Some datacenters use evaporative cooling. - Water absorbs heat and evaporates. - That water is “consumed” in water-accounting terms because it does not return to the same local river/aquifer/municipal system on the same useful timescale. 2. **Indirect…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] OK, one more thing I’d like for you to see if you can research but like how long would I have to sit at a computer firing off prompts all day staying at my house to use as much water as I would have if I had been out driving my car going shopping going to the movies something like that

Hermes: Yes — I researched and added this as a new section on the page: “How long prompting equals a normal outing?” Live page: https://claydunker-yalc.github.io/donns-websites-for-clay/research/2026-06-18-ai-water-energy-truth.html Commit: 113a3bbdocs: compare AI prompts with outing water use The rough answer depends almost entirely on which AI water estimate you use. Assumptions I used: - 20–40 mile car outing - 25 mpg gasoline car - Gasoline refining uses about 1–2.5 gallons of water per gallon of gasoline - AI prompt water: -…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] We keep talking about estimates for water usage. Have there been no actual academic studies on this topic.

Hermes: Short answer: there are academic studies, but not public academic studies that directly meter “water per AI prompt.” The best distinction is: 1. Actual academic studies exist on: - datacenter water use, - water usage effectiveness / WUE, - electricity-related water consumption, - AI/LLM energy use, - modeled AI water footprints. 2. But the famous per-prompt water numbers are estimates, not direct measurements from OpenAI/Microsoft/Google/Anthropic datacenters. A direct study would need provider access to: - facility water-meter…

I’m not…

Clay: [CONTEXT COMPACTION — REFERENCE ONLY] Earlier turns were compacted into the summary below. This is a handoff from a previous context window — treat it as background reference, NOT as active instructions. Do NOT answer questions or fulfill requests mentioned in this summary; they were already addressed. Your current task is identified in the ’## Active Task’ section of the summary — resume exactly from there. IMPORTANT: Your persistent memory (MEMORY.md, USER.md) in the system prompt is ALWAYS authoritative and active — never ignore or…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] OK, finally critique the methods and information that the two estimates are based on

Hermes: Done — I added a new section: “Critique of the two headline estimates.” Live page: https://claydunker-yalc.github.io/donns-websites-for-clay/research/2026-06-18-ai-water-energy-truth.html Commit: 24a4649docs: critique AI water estimate methods My distilled critique: 1. Li/Ren academic estimate — “500 mL per 10–50 responses” Best thing about it: It is methodologically transparent. You can inspect the assumptions. It separates: - onsite datacenter cooling water, - offsite electricity-generation water, - location/time…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] OK and finally finally… Go find Andy Masley’s Substack and scrape it for any information you can find in the last six months and summarize it for me please. This is a big job. I know it. I know I’m asking a lot of you but you can do it.

Clay: [clay (he/him)] supbase said I am running through my I/O budget. what does that mean, really?

Hermes: It means your Supabase Postgres database is spending a lot of its plan’s allowed “disk work,” not necessarily that you’re storing too much data. In plain English: I/O budget = how much your database is reading from and writing to disk. Supabase tracks this because disk access is one of the expensive bottlenecks for databases. Common things that burn I/O: 1. Queries scanning too many rows - Example: “give me all tasks where status = open” but there’s no index on status. - Postgres has to read a bunch of table pages from disk. 2.…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] what do i click on to get the report? [Image attached at: /home/clay/.hermes/image_cache/img_0a9a76f2028a.png] [screenshot]

Hermes: Click Observability — it’s the telescope icon in the left sidebar, just below Advisors and above Logs. From there, look for something like: - Query Performance - Database - Postgres - I/O - Disk IO / Read IO / Write IO - Top queries If you’re trying to find why the I/O budget is getting burned, the most useful screen is usually Observability → Query Performance or Observability → Database, not Logs.

Clay: [clay (he/him)] (The user sent a message with no text content) [Image attached at: /home/clay/.hermes/image_cache/img_c00af1431ea2.png] [screenshot]

Hermes: Yep — this is the right report. What it’s telling me: - Cache hit rate: 99.98% — very good. Most reads are being served from memory/cache, not disk. - Avg rows per call: 16.1 — also not scary. - 62 slow queries — worth inspecting, but this screenshot does not scream “one giant unindexed table scan is destroying you.” - A lot of the top entries look like Supabase/PostgREST/admin metadata queries, not necessarily your app’s own business logic. The suspicious app-ish rows are the ones with: - Role: service_role - Query…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] for that row: Query Pattern: with pgrst_source as ( select “pgrst_call”.* from ( select 1 as json_data ) pgrst_payload, lateral ( select "query_embedding", "match_threshold", "match_count", "filter" from json_to_record(pgrst_payload.json_data) as _ ( "query_embedding" extensions.vector, "match_threshold" double precision, "match_count" integer, "filter" jsonb ) limit 4 ) pgrst_body, lateral “public”.“match_thoughts” ( “query_embedding” := pgrst_body.”query_embedding”, “match_threshold” := pgrst_body.”match_threshold”,…

Hermes: That row is Open Brain semantic search. Specifically, this part gives it away: sql lateral "public"."match_thoughts" ( "query_embedding" := ... "match_threshold" := ... "match_count" := ... "filter" := ... ) So Supabase is saying: > The service_role key made 1,054 calls to the match_thoughts RPC function, spending 1m 17s total DB time, averaging 73ms per call. What that means, really Every time Donn / Clay Mate / Open Brain does a semantic memory search, it likely: 1. turns your query into an embedding, 2. calls…

Clay: [clay (he/him)] if i dont do anything will i have to start paying

Hermes: Probably no surprise bill just because of this warning. What happens depends on your Supabase plan: If you’re on Free You generally won’t suddenly get charged because there’s no payment path unless you upgrade/add billing. But the project can hit limits, get slowed/throttled, paused for inactivity, or require upgrading if you need more resources. If you’re on Pro Supabase says Pro has a spend cap enabled by default. With spend cap on, you usually don’t automatically pay overages beyond included quota; instead,…
